Lydia never knew how she could ever live without her best friend, Hyde. She would have imagined death more enjoyable than life here on Planet Earth with Hyde. There was nothing that could ever come between them. With his soul tied to hers, with her brain linked with his; they would never be apart. Could never be apart. Lydia thought this up until one day one her way to work; the newspaper changed her life. Her whole life. It changed her mind, her heart and most importantly her soul. No one can live without a soul, she knew.
The subway Lydia took to work was always cold and there was always some creeper there to stare at her. Lydia would switch her part over to the right so her blonde hair would cascade over her face, thus relieving her sore eyes from this perverse individual. She knew she was beautiful, despite what she thought. She couldn’t walk down the street without some modeling agent jamming his business card down her throat; she hated it. But that’s what she loved about Hyde, he treated her like a normal person. Not like some sex symbol.
Her eyes gloss over as she looks out the window. There are so many memories her and Hyde had made, she must go back to the best one.
Hyde: (Looking at Lydia) you know you’re down right beautiful, don’t cha?
Lydia: (Rolling her eyes at him she turns to punch him in the arm) Shut up, you know I hate when you do that!
Hyde: (Giving her puppy dog eyes then adding a quivering bottom lip) But ‘tis true, my love. And anyway, OUCH! For being like, twenty pounds you sure have a fist of steel. (Hyde rubs his arm where Lydia’s fist had hit.)
Lydia: That’s what you get. I wasn’t kidding when I told you I didn’t want to hear those things. (Lydia looks away, staring at a couple passing by them.)
Hyde: Look, I didn’t mean to upset you.
Lydia: You didn’t. (Still sternly staring into nothing now.)
Hyde: What’s wrong? (Hyde moves his face into Lydia’s view that now looks a different direction now.) Hey! Don’t you turn away from me, look at me. Pwwweeeeeaaassseee. (Again, he gets into her view, making an atrocious face.)
Lydia: (Lydia busts out laughing) Ha! Your face looks so dumb like that. Leave me alone, I MUST stay mad at you. (She pivots her body opposite from Hyde.)
Hyde: Hey! I have legs, you know. I’ll just walk right over here and get in yo face, beautiful! (Walks in front of Lydia, placing his hands on her legs.)
Lydia: What did you call me!? You’re doing it again. (She tries to look angry and point her finger at him.)
Hyde: (Getting on his knees) But I can’t help it. (Whining) You’re the most beautiful creature I’ve ever laid eyes on AND you’re my best friend. So take that ya big ol’ dummy head.
Lydia: (Laughing) Oh Hyde, I love you.
Hyde: (He looks at her seriously now) I love you too. Now let’s get a cheeseburger, you can have half of mine when you finish yours. We need to get some meat on those bones. (Getting up he offers Lydia his hand. She takes his hand and they walk away.)
It was the first time she ever saw someone change their mood so fast. It was the first time he said ‘I love you.’ How could she forget it? It was the funniest, most serious, and most awkward ‘I love you’ that could be heard around the world, but it was the real thing.
(The subway lurches to a stop. Lydia rises up with the rush and proceeds out the sliding doors. Walking bristly through the hallway, she slips on a newspaper and falls hitting her head on the floor.)
Lydia: Shit! (She grabs her head and rubs the spot where it hurts.) Are you kidding me, right now? Ow…( Looking over to see the newspaper she slipped on, she grabs it and almost wads it up until she reads the front page.) Oh my god. Oh my god. Please don’t be him. (She smooth’s the paper in her hands. Headline reads: SUICIDE OF THE SEASON. On the front cover there is Hyde’s school picture on the front.) Oh my god… (Whispering now, she grabs her phone and calls Hyde, no answer) Hyde, nooooooo. Oh my god. Oh my god. (Lydia runs down the hallway, her high heels clomping under her, she runs up the stairs.) It can’t be, it can’t be. This can’t be happening to me. Hyde! (She screams at the crowd) Hyde! Hyde! Where are you? (Running over to a newspaper stands, she sees many more newspapers that read the same truth.)
They say one cannot live without a soul; Lydia knew this. She didn’t know this of course, until it happened to her. She didn’t know this of course, until her soul left this earth. Lydia and Hyde were after all, soul-tied.
